     Right packaging for courier networks

In the recent years couriers have become an essential part of logistics. E-commerce has also given a thrust to couriers in a great way and still there will be a great demand due to people using e commerce as a via media for purchase. Due to this increasing demand of deliveries through courier, the pressure to perform in terms of delivery mostly overnight and during 24 hrs, courier companies have to look at the whole cycle of logistics-from packaging of goods to mode of transport, safety factors and time.

When the customers order through internet, he or she never gets in contact with the company or seller and they are only receiving the goods which are ordered. The primary success factor is safety of the product and time of delivery. If the product is not packed well, the customer can refuse the delivery at any point of time. Such an instance leads to incremental cost and poor relationship with customer.

High standards of packaging material and process is required to avoid potential customer issues all the time.

Some points to consider

Size of package-According to the product, or content, size has to be defined accurately. Any deviation from the right size may crush or split the package during handling or transit.

Quality of packaging material-High quality packing material is the key to safe delivery. Strength, durability and cushioning is to be considered while making a choice of packaging material.

Corrugated cardboard boxes and cartons are safe with heavy duty double walled board for precious products. For restricting movement of the item, fill material and cushioning should be used.

To secure and seal the packaging strapping should be done with strapping machine or a tough parcel tape should be used as an alternative. Any goods which is delicate and fragile should be placed in the middle of the package so that they can avoid the sides of the packet and products well cushioned on the edges and sides.

Liquids to be packed and couriered need to be dealt separately. Leak free containers well packed with strong material and polythene bag to be used for sealing. Other forms of liquids, oil, and strong odour material to be packed with adhesive parcel tape.

Powder and grains can be packed in polythene bags of good strength and tight sealed in heavy duty box.

While packaging and shipping sharp products, materials or items, edges and points need to be fully covered and protected. Heavy duty cardboard should be used for this and rapping should be done generously and all material to be fixed securely to avoid accidental removal during transit.

Packaging boxes
especially cardboard boxes should be free of adhesive labels with good shape and free of tears and cuts.

Bags made of cloth, Hessian and fabric should be avoided and over tapping the package is harmful.

Packaging will be a positive experience to you, your clients, courier etc if above methods are followed in packaging.
